Russian State Strategy, Hybrid Warfare & Influence Operations in Africa & the Western Balkans

Research, advisory and speaking on Russian strategy, influence operations and conflict dynamics

Nadina Ronc is a senior geopolitical and security analyst specialising in Russian state strategy, hybrid warfare and influence operations across Africa and the Western Balkans. She focuses on how Moscow’s military, political and informational tools reshape local security dynamics and what this means for European, NATO and U.S. policy.

Her 2026 monograph for Joint Special Operations University, From Guns for Hire to Military Doctrine: Russia’s Institutionalization of Influence in Africa – Implications and Recommendations for U.S. Special Operations Forces, examines Russia’s shift from Wagner‑linked proxies to the state‑run Africa Corps and its implications for Western strategy and SOF planning. The study has been highlighted by Small Wars Journal as “one of the most comprehensive threat assessments of Russian gray‑zone activity across the continent.”

Ronc is also a recipient of a research grant from the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College for work on Russia’s interference in Western Balkans security and politics, with findings on Bosnia published in the Journal of Peace and War Studies. She has written and commented widely for international media on Ukraine, Russian foreign policy and contemporary conflicts.
